Montreal Stand-Up Comedy Spotlight: Oren Shbiro Headlines This Sunday

Oren Shbiro comedy returns to the Montreal stage this Sunday night. The Montreal comedian headlines a special stand-up show March 15 at McKibbin’s Irish Pub as he prepares to record his debut comedy album later this spring.

The March 15 performance comes at an exciting moment in Shbiro’s career. After more than a decade performing stand-up comedy in Montreal and abroad, he is preparing to record his debut comedy album at the end of April. Shows like this one serve as the final stage where jokes are sharpened in front of live audiences before they’re permanently captured on record.

For comedy fans, that means a rare opportunity to see new material before it makes its way onto the album.

A Decade Building a Voice in Montreal Comedy

Over the last ten years, Oren Shbiro has become a familiar name in the Montreal comedy scene.

His performances have brought him onto stages at the internationally known Just for Laughs Festival multiple times, including appearances in The Discovery Series, a showcase filmed during the festival and presented by Zoofest. He has continued to appear as part of the festival lineup in both 2024 and 2025.

Beyond Montreal, Shbiro also took his comedy overseas in 2024, performing and producing shows at the world-famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the largest performing arts festival in the world and a major proving ground for stand-up comedians.

Featured on a Just For Laughs Comedy Album

In 2022, Shbiro was featured on the comedy album Heavy Petting Zoo, part of the Just For Laughs Originals series that records live stand-up sets from Montreal comedians.

The album includes three of his performances recorded live during the festival:

  • Relationship Sex – a joke about the challenge of keeping romance interesting in long-term relationships

  • Sexual Instruments – a bit exploring the learning curve of understanding your partner’s body

  • Tough Dad – a personal story about his relationship with his father

The tracks are available to stream on Spotify for anyone curious to hear his style before the show.

A Podcast Born During the Pandemic

Outside of stand-up, Shbiro also co-hosted the podcast Friendship Hour with fellow comedian Jason Celin.

Recorded during the pandemic, the small independent show captured the easy rhythm of two comics catching up regularly — trading stories from the stage, sharing the strange realities of life during lockdown, and exploring the humor hidden in everyday moments.

Preparing for His First Comedy Album Recording

The upcoming album recording scheduled for late April will mark a major milestone for Oren Shbiro.

Stand-up albums often represent years of refining material, and the process leading up to them involves months of smaller club shows where comics fine-tune timing, pacing, and punchlines.

That’s exactly what audiences will see this Sunday night.

The March 15 show offers fans a chance to watch the material in its final stages before it’s recorded — a behind-the-scenes moment in the life of a working stand-up comic.
